Spire hosts webinars to help customers sign up for LIHEAP 

The natural gas utility is helping limited-income customers apply for LIHEAP energy assistance 

ALABAMA (Dec. 15, 2021) — Spire is hosting webinars to help customers in Alabama sign up for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), a federally funded program that assists vulnerable customers with their immediate energy needs. 
The energy provider is providing interactive webinars to help guide customers through the application process. The next webinar is Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. LIHEAP is open to eligible households through May.

•    Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 
•    Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 
•    Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 
•    Wednesday, March 9, 2022, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

“It’s important for our communities to know that if they are struggling to afford their heating bill, help is available,” said Gail Cruz, Spire community and agency services partner. “LIHEAP has been around since the 1980’s. However, many households who may qualify aren’t familiar with how the program can make energy more affordable for them.”

According to the National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition, in 2020, more than 570,000 households in Alabama qualified for LIHEAP. However, only 70,000 households received assistance.

For years, Spire’s community support team has helped community organizations increase awareness around LIHEAP and additional utility assistance.  

“We truly value our partnership with Spire,” said Dr. Gary O. Lewis, executive director of Community Action of Etowah County, Inc. “We always look forward to working together to make sure that low -income individuals and families in Etowah County get the energy assistance that they need. The DollarHelp funds we receive from Spire help to bridge the gap between other energy assistance programs where award amounts are not enough to cover the total bills. If it were not for this partnership, we would be scrambling to find funds from other sources to help those who are most vulnerable to the rising cost of energy consumption.”
