A special delivery for Independence Academy

A special tool can go a long way. That’s especially true for individuals living with sensory sensitivities, autism, ADHD and anxiety – and especially important for students in school.

From backpack giveaways to school supply drives, big truck demonstrations and career fairs, Spire teammates enjoy using their time and talents to give back to community children and teens.

Earlier this spring, employees from Lee's Summit and Kansas City made a special delivery to Independence Academy, an alternative school for grades K-12 in Independence, Missouri. The items delivered were specifically designed to assist children who learn differently.

The donation came about after Spire employees Barb J. and Shelly S. met with the school's principal who identified a need for sensory items that would help the students to focus on learning. Included in the delivery were compression vests, portable lap desks, weighted stuffed animals, hanging seat hammocks, fidget spinners and other items to help children who have trouble sitting still or focusing.

"The opportunity to help support the education of these students is fantastic. The advances that have been made in items that foster focus and quiet attention deficit are unbelievable. The chance to provide those items to current students who will one day be our customers, and perhaps, colleagues is a cause for celebration." She summed it up by saying, "Partnering with Independence Academy just felt right."
