Serving meals to address food insecurity in Kansas City

At Spire, serving others is our daily business. Whether we’re delivering natural gas to a local restaurant during lunch rush or volunteering at a local community kitchen, we know there’s more our energy can do for the communities we serve. 

That’s why supporting individuals who are vulnerable to housing and food insecurity is so important to our mission.

For nearly 100 years, City Union Mission has served as a safe haven for individuals struggling with food and housing insecurity in the Kansas City area.

Last year alone, among many other methods of support, City Union Mission served more than 137,000 meals and provided nearly 77,000 nights of safe shelter to Kansas City residents. They also provide access to other key support services like medical care, job training and recovery programs.

Nourishing Kansas City residents through service  

Recently, a group of pipeline management employees in Kansas City used their Day for Good to serve lunch at City Union Mission’s family shelter. The team prepared meals and served about 50 women and children staying at the shelter.

Normally, the guests have to clean up after their meals, but on this day, they could relax and enjoy their meal.

“Having served at City Union Mission’s Men’s Shelter before, I reached out to my colleagues and asked if we could serve a meal at the family shelter together. I received immediate replies of ‘Yes!’ It was an extremely gratifying experience, especially serving together with other Spire employees. We plan to return to volunteer at this shelter again soon,” said Carl Bowman, Spire pipeline management supervisor.
