How to install a low-flow faucet aerator
Why you need a faucet aerator
A faucet aerator is a small device that slows the flow of water coming out of your faucet.
While most modern faucets come with aerators already installed, you may want to install a lower-flowing aerator to help save the energy needed to heat your water and, of course, to save water itself. An added benefit is less mess around the basin of your sink!
How to install a faucet aerator
- Hit the hardware store: Find an aerator that suits your needs at your local home improvement or hardware store.
- Remove the old aerator: Place a towel in the sink beneath your faucet and close drain stopper to prevent losing any pieces. Remove the collar, which is the piece that holds the faucet in place, by turning it counterclockwise with your hand. Knock out the old aerator and remove it.
- Install the new aerator: Grab your new faucet collar and place it on your counter with the threads facing up. With the mesh end of the aerator facing down, carefully place it inside the new collar. Push down and place the gasket within the collar.
- Place: Once the gasket is in, screw the new aerator in place. Avoid over-tightening and turn on the water to test it out.
The manufacturer of your new faucet aerator will likely have their own set of instructions, so be sure to reference those if you run into any issues throughout the process.
