Check your furnace filter
With a little TLC, you can avoid overworking your furnace this season. Take a moment to check the filter. If it appears visibly dirty or clogged, clean or replace it.
A fresh filter will help warm air move through your home more efficiently. For proper care instructions, always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines.
Install carbon monoxide detectors
Place a carbon monoxide detector on each level of your home. Test these detectors at least once a month and replace the batteries as needed. Most CO detectors last between five to seven years and will start chirping every 30 seconds or so once they expire.
Avoid using your stove as a heater
A natural gas stove is great for cooking, but it should never be used as a heat source. If your furnace stops working, schedule a repair instead of turning to cooking appliances. The former can create a safety hazard, including the buildup of carbon monoxide.
Deck the halls, not the logs
Holiday decorations can brighten up your fireplace mantle. But you want to make sure they’re not too close to your gas logs. The heat can damage stockings, garland and other décor. Check the owner’s manual to see how much space you should leave around them for safe use.
Keep your thermostat steady
Constantly adjusting the temperature can put strain on your heating system. A consistent setting supports better performance during cooler days and nights.
