Learn about the signs of a potential natural gas leak
Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so energy companies like Spire add a harmless chemical called mercaptan to make it detectable and protect the communities we serve.
Mercaptan smells like rotten eggs, so if you ever catch a whiff inside your home or on the street, call us right away when you’re safely away from the smell.
Other signs of a natural gas leak can include:
- A change in the appearance of your pilot light
- A hissing sound or odor near a pipeline or near a building
- Ice formation on the ground above a pipeline
- Distressed or deteriorated plants near a pipeline
If you’re not sure what it smells like, you can request a “Scratch and Sniff” card in the mail to help you learn about this stinky – but important – scent.
